Last year my mom and I decided to finally take the plunge and start to sell the bag that she designed. For a long time she’s been getting compliments and turning down offers from people wanting to buy it off her on the spot, so we decided to get serious about it and created Vagabond & Company. The bag is a minimalist construction with a single wide strap, made to distribute the weight of how much this bag can carry (a lot – I use it as a carry on for air travel and as a diaper bag). As minimalist and versatile as the structure is, the prints we choose are decidedly maximalist, with bold prints and bright colors.
For the summer we chose a range of classic Tropical-inspired prints that feature banana leaves, birds of paradise, and octpus tentacles. I knew from the start that I wanted to have Olga Makarova photograph them. I’ve worked with Olga on many projects before and she has a talent for creating beautiful images that capture the style of her client. To style the shoot I immediately thought of my friend Sophie, who creates beautiful handmade jewelry. Her nature-inspired pieces, such as the Italian Florals Collection fit perfectly with our bags.
The missing piece was of course a location that fit the Tropical theme. I found my answer in the Orto Botanico, otherwise known as the “Giardino dei Semplici.” It was exaclty what I was looking for! The Giardino dei Semplici is a tropical escape right in the middle of Florence with over 9,000 species of plants. It is maintained by the University of Florence and entrance is only 3 euro. Now I know that whenever I need to escape the crowds and reconnect with nature, I don’t need to head out to the countryside! There’s a fantastic oasis right downtown that transports you to a Tropical state of mind.
